When looking for a car or truck many see cars with AWD or 4X4 on their info guides or even labeled on the vehicle itself. And you may wonder what that is. We will walk you through the basics

What is 4×4?

A full-time 4×4 system can operate on all surfaces with all four tires engaged as the default. This setup uses a clutch or center differential to put power down through the front and rear driveshafts to operate and turn at varying speeds. you are also given a selection because of this differential to choose between high and low speeds to give you extra grip or pulling ability. These systems allow you to drive confidently on all types of surfaces and weather conditions.

What is AWD?

All-wheel drive (AWD) is virtually the same concept as a full-time four-wheel drive (4WD). It also powers all four wheels of a vehicle at all times, the only difference is that a “4-low” setting is not available on AWD vehicles. This makes vehicles equipped with AWD less capable than ones equipped with the low range setting but still operate perfectly on the road. This system is used in many sports cars to give them added traction when cornering and hard launches that make them leave harder than 2wd cars.

Part-Time 4WD

Part-Time 4WD operates as a two-wheel drive vehicle by default, and unlike the full-time systems, this uses a locking system to lock the front and rear driveshafts to work at the same time. Making it better for exclusively off-road travel or challenging road conditions. If you drive in 4WD in normal driving conditions it can lead to excessive wear, heat buildup, and early part failure of drive systems.

On-Demand 4WD

On-Demand 4WD systems are operated primarily in two-wheel drive under normal driving conditions, however when you encounter slippery surfaces like snow or mud, the 4WD is automatically engaged to help give added traction and control.

So in summary, the main differences between 4×4, AWD, and the other systems are that AWD is always active, and automatically shares power between tires, while 4WD systems are part-time and are up to the driver to engage at their discretion.

How do I choose?

Selecting AWD or FWD in a vehicle depends on your driving needs. Do you plan to use your vehicle in off-road conditions or in difficult terrain? The technology in a FWD system will be your best option. However, if you experience normal winter road conditions and terrain to make drives such as commuting to work and similar trips, then AWD is all you need. An AWD system works all the time and provides increased grip and control under all road conditions.
